Do Weaboos make you feel embarrassed about liking anime?

I once knew a boy at school who i think is was a Weaboo. He kept trying to suggest me Shojo anime (such as Ouran High School Host Club), dispite me not even mentioning or showing an interest in anime. He also kept asking me to go to a anime related site called Anipock. Again, i did not want to visit the site and i he kept asking me to visit it.

Because this boy was into anime, i did not want to openly admit i was into anime because i was afraid i would be associated with him. He made me feel so embarrassed about liking anime he put me off it for a long time. I only went back into it after i left that school and i would not have to be around him again.

I would be interested to know if you have had experiences with similar people. Especially if they made you feel bad about liking anime.

I can definitely relate. There is this disgusting kid at our school who is into yaoi and hentai, and draws pictures of anime girls during class. However, not everyone watching anime is the same, and anyone who matters shouldn't judge you based on your hobbies.

I know not everyone is like that. Just he was the only one who was into anime at the school i used to go to. He annoyed the crap out of me with his anime talk. He even brought a Chobits manga into the school once and one the students complained about it being a "porn book".

I'm pretty open-minded, so i always say very easily that I like anme. But why not? If someone judges me just because I like watching anime then he/she is not worth it to be a friend.

Weeaboos are embarassing, period.

Psch, I can't believe this... what kind of environment are you in to feel embarassed when he or you're both talking about anime? I say he's just trying to be nice, friendly and all but if you talk to him or just stand up with him with your head held up high, things might get better, if you get what I mean :D

Yeah i get what you mean ;). I felt embarrassed because he was talking about girly anime all the time. I am more into the more adult anime as i don't really like girlish anime. Just he kept going on about it and it annoyed me to death.

That guy doesn't sound like a weeaboo, just like a general jerk. At least for me weeaboo is less about being overly enthusiastic about anime, but about being illogically fond of everything that has to do with japan, because of liking anime. Like idolizing japanese culture, language, politics, people etc...

If you take a look at the Sub vs Dub Thread you are sure to find tons of weeaboos who just think the japanese language is superior to every other language, but that's just one example.

For me Weeaboism is about liking anime and from that concluding that everything about japan is superior.
I probably regret this post by now.

I forgot to put this in my post, but he did ask if he could set a digital clock to the JST (Japan Standard Time) for some reason, even though he could pick any other country. So that shows he may possibly be a Weaboo.

Go straight with him, like ' Listen, i don't get what you're talking about, i'm not into shoujo' or something along those lines or talk about any other else, bring up a topic that's into your taste or might be both into your likings :D

I am afraid that is no longer possible. I left that school a while after he started to talk about anime. But thanks for suggestion, i will use it if i meet anyone like the boy in the future :).

I wouldn't say that easily, every people has its own circumstances, let's just say he doesn't have that kind of situation, it's related to his hobby, what's wrong with that? (^_^?) It's just like asking is there any french/japanese/german/etc. of clothes/foods or whatever you can buy near your place, assuming on this situation you're somewhat like eating or has a sense in fashion :D

Hnhnn, he just mentioned it and you believed him, right? That was already a good start, you never know if he's telling the truth or not, anyway, all is done, so i guess saying this is.. errr.. ahaha (^_^;)

A Weaboo is someone who takes their love of anime, manga, and video games to an extreme level. A Weaboo is someone who is obsessed with Japanese culture and strives to learn many things about Japan and its culture as they can.

A Weaboo is one step above otaku.

I think some people in this thread need to learn what a 'weeaboo' is.

Simply being open about the fact that you like anime is NOT what a weeaboo is.. those creatures are Much Much worse then that.

I think its pretty pathetic that you're not open about it.. So afraid of what others will think regarding stuff You like? Sad.

As to the question though.. Yes those Creatures make me ashamed sometimes.

If there was anything good about Naruto, is that, at least here in Portugal, it gave anime enough visibility to take it out of the shadows and into mainstream.
Plus, there was a long tradition here of airing dubs for kids (Poke/Digi, Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura), which, even though I despise them (hell, I nearly punched a hole through a wall when I read Sakura's original story), I must admit they had some effect.

At least in my university, I have never found a problem, and I talk about it freely.
"Tonight, I sit in the eye of the storm. As fire boils around me, I press forward, winds and lightning lashing my wings. I am no match for what I face. Yet I will not back down, and though fear may place it's stranglehold on my heart, courage will see me through. With tears in my eyes, I hit full throttle. My engines become an inferno, and my weapons light up, awaiting my command.

If I die tonight, I will do so fighting for everything I believe in."

Couldn't care less about such personas.
If I used that logic I'd quite often have to be embarrassed of being a human as well.

Yes in a sense Weaboos make me feel embarrassed about liking anime. The reason is the image Weaboos give to the general public. Many people place those of us who watch anime into the same category as Weaboos. They assume we are all nerdy/geeky males and females who live in our parents basement watching anime 24/7, without a social life, and obsessed with Japanese culture. I feel bad for them in all honesty. I mean they take this zealot obsession of theirs to an unhealthy level. They see Japan as the greatest country on earth and every other country is inferior in every way possible, eventhought they've never been to Japan or are from Japan. They completely disregard their culture, language and replace it with what they believe is the Japanese culture. They try so hard to be Japanese despite them not being from Japan. If anything they insult the Japanese culture by being the way they are. They would be looked down upon in Japanese society, but many of the don't seem to realize that.

Every country has its good and bad I believe.

You are correct. The Westernized definition of the phrase is usually exclusive to anime, however. I feel bad for anyone who ventures to Japan wearing that title with pride.

I'm usually fine with whatever the hell people do, just so long as it doesn't bother me.
So people can be weeaboos, just as long as they don't pester me with that stupid nonsense, where they assume Japan is exactly like how it is presented in anime, how superior it is, etc.

There's also another exception to this "usually"

two years ago at school we once played one kind of word game (where one chooses a word(s) and the others try to guess it by following the rules) during class (it was close to summer) and some girls got to choose the word and it was "kawaii pokemon". the whole class was like WTF? then they got to choose another word (anyone else didn't want or didn't know a good one) and that was "kawaii mochimoto" (not sure if i wrote it right). again, the whole room was "what the hell does that mean?" and they even got to choose the word(s) a third time but it was a sentence formed of too many japanese words that i can't remember. on top of that those girls dressed weirdly even for weaboos. i mean, they had stickers in their face! and one of them brought a stuffed bunny to school once. that was when they were 13 and now they're 15 and look as normal as the other girls in our school.

and that is my worst experience of weaboos

Weeaboos think they're all-knowing about Japan and it's culture because they've seen a couple of anime and throw in anime lingo in their regular conversations.

you make it sound like people must either be obsessed about anime (like weaboos) or hate it. there are "levels" between them. as for me, i don't usually speak openly about anime because there are so many haters who easily make fun of someone liking anime(which is in my opinion weaboos' fault)
