Matt Shaffer (also known as Matty Shaffer) is an American former professional snowboarder and current businessperson. He grew up in Bountiful, Utah, where he began snowboarding and later attended Bountiful High School. Shaffer spent over a decade competing and filming snowboarding segments in the U.S. and internationally, and developed his freestyle ability at local areas including Mueller Park Canyon, Canyons Resort, and Brighton Resort.[1]
Snowboarding career
[edit]Shaffer competed in regional and national contests in FIS-sanctioned slopestyle events throughout the 2000s.[2] He was sponsored by brands such as Burton Snowboards, Red Bull, Nike Snowboarding, as well as others.[3][4]
Contest results include first place at the Rome Premature Jibulation in Vermont,[5] and second place finishes at the Volcom Peanut Butter and Rail Jam (PBRJ) Championships at Mammoth Mountain[6] and Burton Qualifiers Finals at Seven Springs.[7]
Shaffer filmed on backcountry jumps including the 90-foot Pyramid Gap in Alta, Utah, and 110-foot Ravine Gap outside Jackson Hole, Wyoming.[8][9][10] He also joined Burton's team for filming sessions in Japan alongside snowboarder Shaun White.[11]

Shaffer appeared in sponsorship advertisements and editorial coverage in industry publications including Transworld Snowboarding and Snowboarder Magazine, which profiled his riding during Superpark events.[19] He also appeared in a video capturing an avalanche incident at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort that received widespread attention online and was later covered by national media outlets.[20]
Education and business career
[edit]After retiring from professional snowboarding, Shaffer earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business where he also studied abroad in Wales. He worked for a brief time in marketing at Burton Snowboards. After leaving the snowboarding industry, he entered a management training program at ATI.
